wilbur the rabbit

wilbur, the rabbit had a bad habit
he ate everything that he found
one day in the kitchen his whiskers were twitching
and his heart was starting to pound

wilbur gets so excited whenever he smells
the scent of fresh food in the air
his tummy starts rumbling, his mind begins tumbling
and he stumbles around without care
under the cupboards, he found a big basket
filled with wondrous delights
veggies and fruits that tasted so good
he could eat them all day and all night

there was lettuce and shallots, cabbage and peas
turnips and broccoli, onions and beans
apples, and peaches, chives and some cherries
oranges, bananas and various berries

now his senses were soaring, his nostrils were roaring
he just had to tuck right on in!
he was very excited, completely delighted
but he didn’t know where to begin

first he ate a nice plum, then a big peach,
and he nibbled on anything else he could reach
from mango’s to mushrooms and parsnips to pears
he ate till he finished, and the basket was bare

then the smell from the pantry tickled his fancy
so he snuck in without making a sound
and all by himself he hopped up on the shelf
where a bounty of food could be found

a selection of cookies, chocolate and chips
all sorts of candies, biscuits and mints
jars filled with honey, jams and some jelly
a sumptuous delight just right for his belly

wilbur dived and he delved into the shelves
on a quest for something to eat
he was utterly lost, being tumbled and tossed
in a pile of fabulous treats

but balancing out on the tips of his toes
wilbur teetered and tottered and swayed
he over-extended and quickly upended
a stack of canned marmalade

wilbur tripped and he slipped
and he did a backflip - landing on big floppy feet
he was safe and sound, down on the ground
and hungry for more to eat

it just didn’t matter how much he ate
wilbur always had room for more
another pod full of peas went down with ease
as he strutted out through the back door

outside in the garden, Wilbur was nibbling
a big stack of rhubarb he found
soon he was munching, and then he was crunching
as he quickly gobbled it down

looking quite stunning, Mum’s roses were sunning
themselves in the bright summer sky
their petals were scented and Wilbur was tempted
so he plucked them off one at a time!

now Wilbur was finally slowing down
his appetite totally quenched
he had eaten all of the food he had found
and his taste buds were totally drenched

he went up to his bed and he laid down his head
on a big fluffy pillow – so soft
with his tummy well fed, and a bear he called Ted
he slowly began to drift-off

he started to think of the things he had seen
and tasted along the way
he slept through the night, and he dreamt with delight
of starting again the next day

good-night little one, time to sleep, time to dream
