baxter is our puppy,
he lives with us at home
but we don’t really own him,
our house is his to roam
we feed him and we love him,
and we play with him each day
we wash him and we care for him,
and we hope he wants to stay
he’ s a member of our family,
just like mom and dad and me
but Baxter always gets his way
and that’s how it ought to be
a dog’s life isn’t easy,
they have so many things to do
like playing with their toys
and all those bones they have to chew
when we go down to the park,
Baxter run’s and jump’s and play’s
but we always get more exercise
than he does on those days
‘cause He’s a clever little puppy
and he loves to learn new tricks
but it’s really him that teaches
us to throw his ball and sticks
he brings them back to show us
that we have to throw some more
perhaps a little farther now,
than we did before
and when we follow orders
he rewards us every time
he wags his tail and shakes our hand,
which tells us we did fine
but when he dines with us at supper
his bowl sits on the floor
because to sit down at the table
you need just two legs, not all four
his bed is nice and cozy
but he doesn’t like to share
and if you try to sit on it
he’ll growl at you and glare
when I’m in my bed at night
that’s the time I like the best
baxter sneaks in right beside me
and lay’s down his head to rest
he likes it when I read my book,
his tail will slowly wag
his ears get soft and floppy,
and his eyelids start to sag
he makes sweet little noises
as he yawns himself to sleep
that’s how I tell he’s drifted off,
he doesn’t make a peep
yes, Baxter is our puppy
and he’s really my best friend
i just can’t wait till morning
when we get to play again
good-night little one, time to sleep, time to dream
